This collection has been thoughtfully curated by CSSLE as an educational resource for the Exeter community and beyond. Here, you’ll find a range of materials—historical documents, articles, scholarly research, and educational initiatives—designed to support exploration, learning, and dialogue about the history of slavery and its lasting impacts.
We invite you to browse, engage, and reflect. Whether you are just beginning your journey of learning or continuing deeper study, these resources are intended to serve as a starting point for thoughtful inquiry, understanding, and ongoing conversation.
Phase One:

- Develop recommendations for programs, events, exhibits or other means of appropriate recognition to help the community understand Phillips Exeter Academy’s history with enslaved persons.
- Collaborate with the Exeter Historical Society to include research and events focusing on enslaved people in the town of Exeter.
Phase Two:
- Develop recommendations for the study of the experiences of early generations of Black students at Exeter, and for recognition and celebration of their contributions to the life and history of our school.
- Offer suggestions for further exploration of the history of Black students and other historically marginalized groups at Phillips Exeter Academy.
