The Friends of the Academy Library present virtuoso guitarist Robert Squires in the second concert of the annual Summer Concert Series. The concert, which is free and open to the public, will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2007, in Rockefeller Hall in the Class of 1945 Library.
The performance, “Invention and Convergence: An Evening of Solo Guitar,” features Squires, a versatile musician, performing Prelude, by Johann Sebastian Bach; Granada, by Isaac Albéniz; Capricho, Catalan, and Sevilla (among others); Un sueño en la floresta, of Agustín Barrios Mangoré; and selections from the Beatles.
Squires, who has been an adjunct faculty member at Phillips Exeter Academy since 1979, is well known throughout the greater Boston area as the former lead guitarist for Beatlejuice, the popular Boston-based Beatles tribute band. In addition, Squires has presented solo concerts in South America, Canada and the United States. He performs classical and contemporary selections of a large and diverse repertoire spanning from the Renaissance to 20th and 21st century compositions. Squires is also the founder of the Exeter Association of Rockers and is the faculty adviser to Exeter Recorded.
A diverse concert repertoire has earned Squires top awards at the prestigious Toronto International Competition, Guitar ’81, and the Carmel Classic Guitar Festival in California.
Among Squires’ recording credits are symphonic recording with the Slovak Radio Symphony, the North Shore Philharmonic, and the Cape Ann Chamber Ensemble. He has also recorded at the famed EMI Abbey Road Recording Studio in London, England.
In concert, Squires has performed as lead guitarist with such notables as Brad Delp, Ben Orr (The Cars) and Tony Sheridan of Beatles fame.
