Flutist Julia Scolnik, '74

Exeter, NH (July 30, 2008)—On Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at 7 p.m., flutist Julia Scolnik, a 1974 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, will perform with her daughter, pianist Sophie Scolnik-Brower as part of the Phillips Exeter Academy Library’s Summer Concert Series. The event will be the final and sixth performance of this year’s series, hosted by The Friends of the Academy Library. It will be held in Rockefeller Hall in the Class of 1945 Library, on Front Street. It is free and open to the public.

The duo’s performance, entitled “Salut D’Amour,” will include music by such composers as W. A. Mozart, Frédéric Chopin, Arthur Foote, Lowell Liebermann, Sir Edward Elgar and Leroy Anderson.

Praised by The Boston Globe for her “tonal enchantment,” Scolnik has enjoyed a diverse musical career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral flutist. The 2008–09 season marks her 12th year as artistic director of the Andover Chamber Music Series and Mistral, its ensemble-in-residence. Scolnik is universally recognized for her thematic, imaginative programming and the rapport she establishes with her audiences. She has performed as a guest flutist at music festivals throughout the United States, and has collaborated with international ensembles including the Borromeo, Brentano and Lydian String Quartets.

In earlier years, Scolnik performed as principal flute with many of Boston’s leading orchestras—Emmanuel Music, The Boston Ballet and Lyric Opera—and has toured and recorded with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She resides in Andover, Massachusetts.
