In 1958, the Library received a wonderful gift from Albert Lee, a member of the Class of 1887 and the managing editor at
Collier's Weekly. Lee presented us with the handwritten journal of Roald Amundsen, one of history's greatest explorers.
Written soon after Amundsen's discovery of the Northwest Passage (the sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific) and sent to Collier's for publication, the journal is as profound as it is unique. It describes the journey of Amundsen and his crew on the ship Gjøa as they made their way through the treacherous far northern waterways of the Arctic Circle on a quest for a long sought after prize that had eluded many larger and better funded expeditions.
