The Art Department offers a wide range of courses to elevate visual perception and promote visual literacy. The studio courses develop the ability to create and to see. The art history courses not only foster ways of seeing, but also provide a context that traces the development of civilization. The Art Department seeks to provide students, through the making and viewing of art, the means to enrich their life experience and mediate the visual, media-saturated world in which we live.

The Frederick R. Mayer Art Center provides superb facilities for simultaneous instruction in many areas of the fine arts: architecture, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. Some classes include computer-manipulated design. The classrooms are philosophically and physically connected with the Lamont Gallery and the Academy Building. A slide library, an audiovisual department, and the Jan P. Mayer Auditorium provide space and equipment for art history and studio support. Gallery spaces display student work year-round.

Most 200-level courses are offered each term, except where noted. The term(s) in which 300-level courses are offered is noted at the bottom of the course description. Since the Art Department cannot offer every studio course and every art history course every term, care should be taken in planning course selections.
